BIRKBY - BRADLEY COMMUNITY GREENWAY

A tarmac-surfaced, traffic-free path from Bradley, to the north east of Huddersfield, with a signed road link into the centre. Deighton railway station on the Huddersfield line is near the northern end of the Greenway. The path runs near the Huddersfield Broad Canal for part of its length - switching to the towpath gives a different route into Huddersfield centre. New link paths have been constructed and it is now recognised as National Cycle Network Route 69. It connects to the Calder Valley Cycleway at Bradley via a new road crossing point of the Leeds Road (A62).

CALDER VALLEY GREENWAY
2007 sees substantial sections of this route completed:
* Leeds Road A62 at Bradley, Huddersfield to Wood Lane, Battyeford nr Mirfield. This section uses a bridge over the Trans Pennine Railway Line and the refurbished Bradley Viaduct over the River Colne and Huddersfield Broad Canal.
* Battyeford to Mirfield via a disused rail corridor
* A644 at Mirfield to Holroyd Park, Ravensthorpe. A linking section on quiet residential roads is planned to provide direct access to the Spen Valley Greenway at Dewsbury Moor.
* Spen Valley Greenway at Scout Hill to Dewsbury via a riverside path

AIRE AND CALDER NAVIGATION - WAKEFIELD TO ALTOFTS
South of Altofts, near Birkwood
Initially using part of the Trans Pennine Trail to the east ofWakefield, the route then swings eastwards along the canal towpath to link by road to Lower Altofts, near Normanton. There is grit towpath up to Birkwood lock and a wide tarmac road with only restricted motor traffic beyond that.
See leaflet Wakefield Cycling Map.

The trail between Wetherby and Thorp Park
SPOFFORTH TO WETHERBY

Part of the National Cycle Network, this well-surfaced, level and traffic-free railpath runs from Spofforth, part way between Harrogate and Wetherby, into Wetherby. After negotiating some roads in Wetherby centre you soon on railpath again, heading east to the attractive village of Thorp Arch. There are plans to extend the route east to Tadcaster, crossing the Wharfe on a former viaduct - should be spectacular!

CHEVET BRANCH LINE RAILWAY PATH
Accessible at the western end from Newmillerdam Country Park, it provides a good link between Crigglestone and Notton. It currently ends at the B6132 north-east of Notton but there are plans to improve the current permissive bridleway so as to link to the Trans Pennine trail.

GREAT NORTHERN TRAIL
This fantastic sounding route is slowly but surely taking shape. You can already ride a short section of south-east of Cullingworth that crosses the spectacular Hewenden Viaduct and links to Harecroft. When finished it will link Queensbury to Cullingworth and be a vital cross-moorland link in West Yorkshire's part of the National Cycle Network. By the time you read this work may well be complete on a section between Queensbury and Cockin Lane near Thornton. Those who like rougher trails can use it along with the many ridleways in the area, including a spur of the Pennine Bridleway.     www.thegreatnortherntrail.co.uk
